I'm watching an English documentary full of british humour about the Da Vinci Code. The actor Tony Robinson is "on a mission" trying to find out clues about Brown's truth. It's quite entertaining because of Robinson's style. Brown refused to give him an interview btw.

I must say first that I didn't like The Da Vinci Code and I'm not going to see the movie starring Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou.

I didn't like that book mostly because, as I told Frances, I thought it isn't a good mystery novel. It's easy to read but not well written, it's a blatant lie easy to figure out and the characters are flat. Being a sucker for mysteries and crime novels I can see the difference between that poorly plot and what is written by good American authors. Besides there's nothing refreshing in DVC.

Brown only used old stuff  from previous novels (about The Grail meaning actually Sang Réal and Le Prieuré de Sion) and developed many unlikely connections that would have made Umberto Eco laugh his ass out (sorry Professore!). Besides as a Historian, there are a few things that pissed me off (about The Templars and medieval stuff), and I knew that the so-called secret society, le Prieuré de Sion, was completely made up by 3 French men in the 80's. As Robinson said, it's like The Monty Python! It was nothing but a con and a joke between friends. The problem is that Brown presented it as something historically accurate. And many readers believed him. As a History Teacher I'm bothered by that of course.

What happened then reminds me a lot of what Eco decribed in Foucault's Pendulum. Some people became convinced that the Prieuré was true and the fake sources made by our jokers were real!

The con worked in the 80's and a first book ensued (Holy Blood Holy Grail).

The question could be is Dan Brown some fool who bought the con and drew his inspiration from Baigent's book...genuinely, or did he knowingly dig this fake stuff out to make his own best-seller 20 years later? I don't think it matters actually. He stroke it lucky, good for him!

But as Robinson says at the end of the documentary, Dan Brown only did what many poor medieval authors used to do...Mankind changes and at the same time remains the same still.

I had heard before that Dan Brown "stole" or "developed" his ideas from another book published in the eighties. I wasn't sure which one. I enjoyed both "The Davinci Code" as well as "Angels and Demons", but knew better than to take them as historical fact. It's speculation at best, more accurately just entertainment of what if thoughts.

But I'm not at all into Tom Hanks as the lead character. I thought Denzel Washington would be better. I'll probably see the movie when it hits pay-per-view or Direct TV. It won't pull me to the theater.

FINALLY!!! Someone else who thinks the Da Vinci code is not 'the book' that everyone else seems to think it is!!!!! I agree with you about the characters, and I got REALLY irritated with how many 'cliff hangers' there were - someone should tell Brown that you don't need them at the end of EVERY chapter! I've read some of his other books, but really because they are escapist, easy to read, and not too taxing on the brain (I usually spot who dunnit way before the end!), so they're great as far as that is concerned. BUT the Da Vinci Code has somehow become 'history' and I think people need to realise it's fiction!!

I'm annoyed I missed the Tony Robinson programme. What was it called (maybe I can catch a repeat showing?).

Tom Hanks as the lead... I really don't see him unless he's going to really tone up, the lead is a swimmer isn't he?

*phew!* sorry - rant over, and I'll climb down off my soapbox now....

If you don't mind I'm friending you sweetie, because I like the way you think!!

Of course I don't mind, I know you from MoZ!

And since you aren't scared of my English...*wink*

I love James but really I'd like to have a conversation with him about that book and make him understand...Wait a minute? If I were face to face with James would I lecture him about DVC?

Probably yes. I guess I'm hopeless.

Damn I'm in The Pink Bits thread on MoZ and currently reading James' comment about curved penises and how masturbation makes them bend!

That could be a good topic too! LOL

It's an Australian James Marsters board, but the Pink Bits is in a hidden subforum (VIP) in the Members Crypt and you can't read The Members Crypt unless you have reached 20 posts.

I'm afraid you can't see the thread in question before a long time but eher's the link of the forum:

http://www.mozforum.com/

I think you'd love that place though...

Ok basically James was on a radio (tv?) show called Love Line in 2003 and he had that conversation:

Boy wants to know if your penis bends if you masturbate too much. Gee whiz. Host1 says it’s possible, he has no clue.)
James: Yeah, you can actually get to the G-Spot better if your penis does bend that way.
Host1: Really? If it goes up, not to the side?
James: (hesitantly, defers to Host2): Uh, what do you think - what's your opinion…
(Host2, who’s some sort of licensed doctor, says vitamins make bending go away. And now this transcriber knows far more about this than she ever wanted to know.)
James: (from background): Oh, try vitamin B, I’m sorry..

Hey, chani -
Another thing that came to mind as I was re-reading your post and the comments with it, is that I bet that many Americans are praising that book for political reasons. There's a big rift in the the american society between religious and non-religious or more likely, christian and non-christian. I think that the non-christian segment is seeing the book as "proof" or support for their point of view. Where as the christian segment has villainized Dan Brown for trying to destroy christianity. It has political undertones for americans, as if anything doesn't these days.

Me? I liked the book, but have no political or historical uses for it because it's just a book in the fiction aisle of the store. Oh, and I hate politics. Absolutely abhor them. Being the agnostic that I am, I'm all about the gray area. And politicians hate gray area. "You must choose a side" and all that bullying.

Well that's more politically charged than I ever get, so I'm stopping now before I become physically ill. But I thought that perhaps knowing the political/religious ties that many americans are putting with the book might be intersting to you. If Dan Brown is proved to be a rip-off, then both political sides lose ammunition that is being used to further promote their side's agenda. And they sure don't want that to happen. It's about winning, even if it means basing their debate on false/unproven ground.

Yeah you're probably right. James loved that book for a reason I guess...

But give a try to Dan Simmons' "Clarion Comfort", there's an old Southern Lady in that novel who is the best Villain ever I've read about. I thought that living in the South you might enjoy it.

sounds interesting. I'll check it out on Amazon. I always love a villain southern lady.

BTW... still waiting on that Dan McRae I ordered from them. They did say it would be about six weeks getting here.
