[profile] frances_lievens and I are making a LJ community to fit my idea of a Salon in which we could discuss everything, like they did in the 18th Century.

I'll keep this LJ as an interface between my LJ friends and me and for fandom stuff, but the community will be devoted to films reviews, tv reviews, book reviews, art and discussions on everything philosophical or sociological, or meta etc...

I hope the community will be operational from Wednesday on, but neither she nor I are very versed in computery stuff (ok she's far better than me, she's doing the customizing !) so we could use some help from LJ users who have mastered html, artwork etc...

For instance we'd need an icon for the community, an icon that would suit the idea of a Salon. A header perhaps too?

If anyone could help, that would be great. Thanks in advance.

I've emailed my progress.

(and for what I've done now, you don't need to be very html-savvy...)

Do you think we need a header?

It would be cool, to have one that would look like a real Salon...wouldn't it?

IMHO, I like it as is...but that's just me.

I have a couple of bits written already...one film, one music thing...

so yeah...

Oh I found other pictures that could serve as icon bases or for header.

Wow, very kitsch.

I'm currently working from pictures by P. He promised to make some for me later in the afternoon. It will be lots of mugs. ;-) I've uploaded one and made it default, so you'll get the jist of most of them.

Still looking for something with couches etc. I'm tempted of photographing my own...

P.S.: How much I like [livejournal.com profile] comava's icons, I'd like it not to be a blatant 18th century salon. It's our 21st century salon and 18th century is only an inspiration...
P.P.S.: Currently there won't be any words on the icons.

I agree it's a 21st century salon.

BTW I'm explaining what our inspiration was in the user info page. I'll need you to check it out!

Good work! I've written a slightly similar blurb for the guestbook (which should be our first post on Wednesday...) I'll email it to you once I've went over the French spelling.

I uploaded a userpic!

It's a picture I took in Versailles...no don't worry it isn't a 18th century salon. It's something else...

BTW I wanted to use a Pascal's quote for the loaction, you know the one defining God: "a circle whose circumference is nowhere and centre everywhere", but oculdn't make it show.

Noticed the location didn't show. Maybe it doesn't show locations with a community?

I like that userpic. I'm making some more and will upload those in my photobucket, so you can view and choose there...

(some are 18th century, though... I'm breaking my own rules!)

I'm not very talented in making graphics but this interested me all the same. These are from a picture of the salon in Voltaire's Château de Ferney, I think... a header (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/Gabismo/voltairesalonheader.jpg) and two (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/Gabismo/voltairesalonicon1.jpg) icons (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/Gabismo/voltairesalonicon2.jpg). Just as a suggestion!

Also I think this is a great idea for a community and I will definitely be joining. :-)

Hey! Lookit you making a community! I think that's great. :D

I don't know much about those topics, I mean, I don't think I'd have anything interesting or valuable to add to those types of conversations, but I'd like to join and listen in occasionally if that's alright. You can count on me to be supportive. :)

Thank you, babe!

And you may be surprised by yourself, I'm sure you'll have valuable things to say on various matters.

Hey Sharl, you have to check:

This has to be the funniest product site ever. (http://shaveeverywhere.com/)

Don't forget to turn the sound on!

LMAO! I've never seen the website for that, but I've seen the product. It works! I, uh, know a couple guys who use it...if you know what I mean. ;-)

Now you've got me to thinking....

I've had a few people ask me about how men can get rid of hairy places without waxing. I think I might link this on the links section of my LJ. Right after the brazilian wax link. :D

I had a similar discussion on Friday afternoon in the teachers room (can you tell it was the end of the school year!)and have been told that being hairless is now out of fashion in gay Paris !

The world is going to be divided between the countries of hairy men (even the gay ones) and the others.

See, this totally could become a dicussion in our Salon, under the coffeetable-discussion tag.

Speaking of your LJ, have you heard of that controversy about how LiveJournal.com has banned a photo of a baby breastfeeding as a default icon on grounds that it constitutes an indecent sexual display?

It's over at http://community.livejournal.com/boob_nazis/1746937.html

And this is a lovely idea. :)

Merci Caroline!

En plus nous avons décidé que le Salon serait bilingue pour garder un lien avec le 18ème siècle.

Maybe something like this.....

Actually I'd like a cool icon like yours (this one, the one showing your farm from the sky). Something original and elegant but that would mirror the community.

And you'd better join it when it's ready!

From: [identity profile] candlelightfrot.livejournal.com
I was thinking more of those above as banners for your community on the webpage.... not the default user icon.

Date: 2006-06-04 01:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] frenchani.livejournal.com
But those don't show a Salon, not in the meaning of the 18th century.

Is not a Salon... anywhere people gathered?

Even something like Manet - Le dejeuner sur l'herbe, which might make a nice icon.... or not.

"Salon" has different meanings. The first picture showed a recpetion room, the second picture you posted is about some art event, basically it's a exhibition.

Check our user info page and you'll understand that what I meant by Salon was different.

http://community.livejournal.com/salon_virtuel/profile

"Le déjeuner sur l'herbe" is very nice as an icon indeed, but I am not sure it's tied in with the idea of a Salon. It would be great for the discussions about painting though.

I can help by throwing in the left ball dumb comments every now and again, and on very rare occasions, I might even have something worthwhile to contribute but...

... don't hold your breath, pet. Don't want to be blamed for giving Chani appoplexy!

Good on you for doing this, truly. As Tom Hanks nearly says in, Field of Dreams,

"Build it, and they will come..."

Go Chani, Go Frances!

I will need to know what style of LJ it is and possibly maybe need the password to be able to change it as it may be an overwriting code. First of all though, the style and design will do and I can play about on a temporary one, if you want to e-mail me instead it's jo.benham@theconsortium.co.uk

I knew that old email addy I had for you wouldn't work anymore!

It's S2 and the layout is "Smooth Sailing". It's Frances who did it so you'd better ask her. She should be around.
