Some people got concerned about what's happening in Paris and emailed me or left comments on LJ about it. I don't know how foreign media dealt with the events but sounds like they were presenting them like there would be some civil war going on in Paris. I really have the disturbing impression that they are emphasizing and exaggerating things on your screens.
Yes riots and violent behaviour have been occurring for a week, and yes it's shocking but it's quite located in certain suburbs, and even there, they're only a few projects in the Parisian suburbs and in the provinces facing the mess made by a bunch of hooligans. And I think that the media have a big responsability for the spreading of that violence.
Don't get me wrong, it's disturbing and it must be horrible for the people living over there because buses and cars got burnt and as usual it's the most vulnerable people, the most exposed who take the rap. Unfortunately the situation isn't new. Those areas are awful to live in, there's a high unemployment rate and the building are damaged. They have a history of violence...There's a lot of despair and black economy often rules. Religious fundamentalism feeds on that situation bringing youngters against our Republic, and so do criminal organizations. Sometimes those groups are the same (nests of terrorism), sometimes they are not. I don't live in the suburbs but I know it because I used to work in such suburbian towns and some of my students were already pretty violent and well known by the police. The current behaviours are pretty self-destructive given that they're damaging their area. Apart form those areas, I have friends and family living in the suburbs and it's rather peaceful. Of course Sarkozy's statements didn't help to calm down the young people...That guy is totally irresponsible!
BTW if there's any "civil war" going on in Paris these days it's actually the one taking place inside of our government between Prime Minister Dominique De Villepin and his Minister of the Interior, Nicolas Sarkozy but that's another story.
Speaking of disturbing things on screen, I watched the last Nip/Tuck
