Playing with myself

Get your mind out off the gutter! I'm simply avoiding the papers I should have marked during the holidays so I decided to do what nobody asked me to...Answer the fandom meme for BTVS and Ats, since it's actually the only fandom I know and belong to (I watch other shows but I don't know the fandoms).

1 . The first character I first fell in love with: Giles and I love him still. I started watching the show because of Giles.

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Ethan. When I first saw Halloween, I noticed him and he caught my interest but I would have never expected to love that much a character shown in only 4 episodes.

3. The character everyone else loves that I don't: Jonathan. He was there from season 1, Buffy saved his ass many times and he kept making the wrong choices over and over. He was weak and never learnt his lesson.  I didn't like Anya much until season 6 either...

4. The character I love that everyone else hates: Buffy? I love Buffy, but many fans disliked her at the end of the show. I love Buffy the first 3 seasons but didn't relate to the HighSchool Valley girl much...Willow was my favourite character then. I prefer a darker Buffy who is less of a little girl and more of a woman. Loved her in season 5, and still loved her in season 6 and season 7.

5. The character I used to love but don't any longer: Willow. It isn't that I don't love her anymore, but the character was very disappointing in season 7 after STSP. I actually loved Willow until BY, then I don't care much about her.

6. The character I would shag anytime: SPIKE !!!!!!!

7. The character I'd want to be like: I could say Giles for many of his facets, but I think I'll say Buffy for her courage, her resilience and above all her ability to forgive everybody around, because she did forgive them, all of them...while I kinda bear grudges.

8. The character I'd slap: Xander from time to time.

9. A pairing that I love: Spuffy first and above all. The best couple ever seen on tv. They were incandescent on screen. Spike is my favourite character, but it's Spuffy that I'm obsessed with and that led me to read fanfictions. It's a bit scary to be into a fictional couple the way I am. But I can't help...they keep moving me like nothing else does.

10. A pairing that I despise: On the show? I can't tell that I despised any pairing. There are some I didn't support but they had a role to play in the story (Buffy/Angel in season 3, Buffy/Riley, Giles/Jenny...). Ok maybe Willow/Kennedy!

Now in fanfic I dislike many pairings that are only fanon and aren't credible at all given to what we saw on screen like Giles/Buffy or Spike/Xander. For me they are nonsense and fanwank. I'm so happy they never made a Faith show with Spike in it btw.

And I can't stand Spike with someone else than Buffy, especially if Buffy is "around". It's okay if it's BB (Before Buffy!) though. The only exception is that Jack guy with whom Spike had a liaison in [livejournal.com profile] herself_nyc  's Lovingkindness!

And to be honest I don't like any threesome involving Spike and Buffy (except if it's with another Spike!) because I think it's out of character for both of them.

1 . The first character I first fell in love with: Never really fell in love with an Ats character, but Wesley in L.A definitely got me watching the show!

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Angel because I didn't care about him in BTVS and he even annoyed me a lot in season 3...It was a good idea to give him his own show! Or Faith, she was great in season 4. Oh and Harmony in season 5!

3. The character everyone else loves that I don't: Fred...Groo...

4. The character I love that everyone else hates: Darla?

5. The character I used to love but don't any longer: Knox. Loved him at the beginning of season 5, thought he could be so much more...but they destroyed him in A Hole In the World turning him into a mere acolyte. It was a great disappointment. Same with Lindsey, a character I loved in earlier seasons and that was much less interesting in season 5 IMO.

6. The character I would shag anytime: Wesley...until season 5, then it would be Spike of course.

7. The character I'd want to be like: None but Wesley probably would be the closest.

8. The character I'd slap: season 3-4 teenage Connor

9. A pairing that I love: I kinda loved Wes/Lilah or Angel/Darla...but above all Wes/Illyria!

And I would have loved Wes/Faith to happen. The torture session in season 1 and later the way they worked together in season 4 showed a lot of potential for that couple! Faisley would have rocked!

10. A pairing that I despise: "Despise" is a bit strong but I never supported Wes/Fred, and I disliked Cordy/Connor (not because it was wrong and looked incestuous, but because the writing was poor and it was forced on us). I didn't like Angel/the blonde cop either, and I dislike Cordelia/Groo.

What would be your answers?

I'm avoiding working too... isn't it difficult to get back into the routine of working when there has been a break. We are allowed to not include holiday breaks in the marking time allocated to us (we are allowed to take up to 3 weeks to mark a set of assignments), but I really should have done some over the Christmas break..... *sigh*

Loved this btw - I agree with all your comments except I liked BtVs for all the characters and their interactions to start with. I agree with Xander - they really ran out of ideas for that character which was such a shame (I loved the Zeppo), and Wesley was great (until Spike came along LOL!!). Cordy and Connor - awful, just awful!!!

Oh I liked BTVS for all the characters and the wonderful writing, the metaphors etc...But I started watching because of Giles. At the time I wasn't surfing on the Internet and I didn't have the cable so I actually watched a French-dubbed version which is quite different. Over here it was considered as a kids show, so without the attractive librarian with green eyes and a wonderful smile, I guess I wouldn't have tried to know the show better. Of course once I got the cable and saw the episodes in English (season 4) and started looking for spoilers (season 5), it was another story. I really became a fan and ended up posting on the C&S spoiler board and downloading season 6 because I was convinced that show was the best thing I've ever seen on tv!

Well, I have to finish the marking now. You're lucky to be allowed to have true vacations! The next ones are going to be awful and hectic because we're doing a "Bac' Blanc" which is a "rehearsal" of the final exam...it lasts the whole week before the winter break so I'll have to mark the anonymous papers during the holiday, it's big since it's a 4 hours test of History and Geography (it's the double of an usual test because they have to answer a question for both matters)!

I liked Buffy/Riley. I liked them even better than Buffy/Angel. That was such a teenage like relationship, but Buffy/Riley was cool, they were growing up, they looked good together and then had to split up because it didn't really work and they had some (a lot of) issues. Yeah, unlike what I heard when I started reading other people's ideas on the internet, I did like Buffy/Riley and thought they were good for each other.

Oh and I'll answer one question for BtVS:

The first character I first fell in love with: Spike and it will always be Spike. I regularly started watching somewhere in season 4 and Spike was such a great character in that season, with (for me, because I missed a lot of background info from the previous seasons) an obscure and hidden past. Damn, I could do so much with that character and make up complete stories about him. I still can, btw.

[identity profile] frenchani.livejournal.com 2006-01-03 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a wonderful character. I think that "Becoming" was the first episode I watched and of course I noticed Spike's hotness but he had a minor part and wasn't very developped in the finale then I watched reruns of season 1 and kept being in love with Giles and relating to Willow (for both her geekiness and her crush on Giles!)and it's only when I watch reruns of season 2 and "School Hard" that I decided that Spike was my favourite character! But I wasn't a BTVS fan yet...

Then I got the cable where season 4 was being shown (yeah I saw season 4 before seeing season 3! LOL)and I was thrilled by the accents, the puns and episodes like "The Intiative" and "Something Blue" that turned me into a Spuffy shipper (even if I didn't know the expression at the time). In season 5, I was definitely hooked and when I saw "Fool For Love" it was like the proof I was right and I melted because you know James' acting skills fleshed him out. Ah William's nod!

They (the writers and James)created something grand when they made him.

Good times!

In season 4 Spike is the most interesting character of them all, I think. It's this whole bad boy attitude, that made me interested in him, and also the fact he has to start working with the scoobies to keep himself alive. He's such an incredibly interesting persona. I can't recall much of it now. It's been ages since I've seen the episodes. Darn.

FFL wasn't the ep that won me over, but the one that told me I was right in being interested in this "creature". It is the ep that made Spike P.'s favourite character as well.

Strangely one of my favourite episodes is S3's "The Wish", but that's because of the complete alternate universe in it and because no other series has ever pulled this one off so good as BtVS. It's also why I like the Jonathan episode so much in S4.

[identity profile] frenchani.livejournal.com 2006-01-03 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I don't really agree. I think that Spike became even more interesting in season 5 when we found out the truth about William the Bloody...suddenly he got layers and wasn't simply reduced to the comic relief (whether he had funny lines or was pathetic like in Lover's Walk), the snark and the Bad Boy's sex appeal that was him in season 3 and season 4 (I love them but the depth he got with FFL turned him into an icon).

Season 4 is my favourite season though, because it has terrific episodes, some of the best ever (Hush, Restless, SB, A New Man)and season 4 Giles is great, and Spike had to adjust indeed. The chip was a fantastic plot device. Both are very interesting (I love when they lived together )while the youngsters didn't progress much.

Damn the marking is boring...hence my constant replying to your comments! LOL

[identity profile] frances-lievens.livejournal.com 2006-01-03 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I meant that Spike was the most interesting character in s4 compared to the others. lol

Of course he got more depth in s5 (I was soooooo disapointed it was nothing like what I had imagined, but it was even better! see, I'll never be a good writer...)

Well, good luck with the marking. ;-)
I think I'll be doing some writing.

P.S.: There's a Spani story brewing in my head. It's all pretty hazy, but I hope to have written something for you before the end of the week. *bisous*

I didn't dislike Buffy/Riley and I never hated Riley but I didn't think it would work and it didn't eventually. Rewatch "Something Blue" and you'll see it's obvious the relationship was doomed. Buffy was trying to convince herself she could date a normal guy and she run inot his arms to forget a certain spell!

[identity profile] frances-lievens.livejournal.com 2006-01-03 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Well yeah, but I don't think you should dismiss the relationship like some people seem to have done. Hey, it was good for them while it lasted!

Tell me about it..... I've got so much stuff to do, there just isn't enough fanfic for me to read instead. By the end of the week, I'll probably be approaching meltdown.

I'm trying to think back to my first experiences with Buffy, but it's all a bit hazy. Watched parts of it on German tv, but I just can't remember whether I saw bits and pieces of season 1 or season 2 first. Nevermind, I'll try. But I'll only do the ones that have instant answers.

1 . The first character I first fell in love with: Willow. In a completely heterosexual way. Oh and Oz. I think the first episodes I saw were from their early courtship. Or not. See above. I think I was just stunned that this tv show with a rather premise that sounded rather cheesy was actually a really brilliant depiction of high school and teenage.

4. The character I love that everyone else hates:Not everyone hates her, but I always liked Anya. She tried to fit in, but being an ex-demon it was really hard. Also? Liked her outspoken-ness about sexual matters. Oh and Dawn. She was meant to be an annoying teenager. It wasn't her fault. Being the slayer's younger sister must have been difficult. I think I'm beginning to see a pattern here...

5. The character I used to love but don't any longer: Angel on BtVS. He was this mysterious stranger, there was this doomed romance. Maybe it's also a factor that the guy who dubbed his voice in German sounded good. But that was all B.S., before Spike. By the end, I was glad that it was over - in a bitter-sweet way. I still like the relationship as a representation of romantic first love fantasies, but it was sure doomed from the beginning.

6. The character I would shag anytime: Spike.
