Some people got concerned about what's happening in Paris and emailed me or left comments on LJ about it. I don't know how foreign media dealt with the events but sounds like they were presenting them like there would be some civil war going on in Paris. I really have the disturbing impression that they are emphasizing and exaggerating things on your screens.
Yes riots and violent behaviour have been occurring for a week, and yes it's shocking but it's quite located in certain suburbs, and even there, they're only a few projects in the Parisian suburbs and in the provinces facing the mess made by a bunch of hooligans. And I think that the media have a big responsability for the spreading of that violence.
Don't get me wrong, it's disturbing and it must be horrible for the people living over there because buses and cars got burnt and as usual it's the most vulnerable people, the most exposed who take the rap. Unfortunately the situation isn't new. Those areas are awful to live in, there's a high unemployment rate and the building are damaged. They have a history of violence...There's a lot of despair and black economy often rules. Religious fundamentalism feeds on that situation bringing youngters against our Republic, and so do criminal organizations. Sometimes those groups are the same (nests of terrorism), sometimes they are not. I don't live in the suburbs but I know it because I used to work in such suburbian towns and some of my students were already pretty violent and well known by the police. The current behaviours are pretty self-destructive given that they're damaging their area. Apart form those areas, I have friends and family living in the suburbs and it's rather peaceful. Of course Sarkozy's statements didn't help to calm down the young people...That guy is totally irresponsible!
BTW if there's any "civil war" going on in Paris these days it's actually the one taking place inside of our government between Prime Minister Dominique De Villepin and his Minister of the Interior, Nicolas Sarkozy but that's another story.
Speaking of disturbing things on screen, I watched the last Nip/Tuck
Disturbing really...that guy who wanted Christian and Quentin to amputate his leg because he would feel whole at last without it freaked me out. That architect was a sicko. The beauty of negative space, my ass!
I completely sided with Christian during the episode, even though he did remove said leg after the guy shot it.
I know that as usual that patient's case served as a metaphor. Both Julia and Sean gave something up to feel better, to find themselves again..., to feel complete, or so they said (well Julia was very explicit about that, and later Sean was too...too much for my taste. The writers didn't need to tell us what we were supposed to get. I wouldn't have written that line BTW).
Julia's leg was Sean, Sean's leg was McNamara&Troy. When Sean left his job to work for The Witnesses Protection, he symbolically amputated himself.
It's interesting that Christian was suffering from the opposite, a symptom usually called "ghost limb". Christian's missing leg is Sean of course. He got amputated despite himself. He's missing Sean, he no longer feels complete without Sean. I recall that in a previous episode, when Christian was arrested for the Carver's murder, Sean told Julia something similar. He said that he knew Christian because he was a part of himself...
Sean is soooooo disappointing these days. Every episode he does something wrong. I think it was wrong to convince the boy to do the surgery, and it was wrong to change the boy's face. In a way what he did to that boy is exactly what he did to Christian, and he did it for the same reasons, to feel better about himself. He finds his new work "a hell lot more satisfying". I don't think that Sean is morally superior than Christian. Au contraire!
I really hope that Sean and Christian won't stay separated too long, because that couple is the raison d' être of the show. I think that they are both making a mistake, Sean by working for the FBI and Christian by getting married to Kimber...and Quentin is definitely a bad influence.
On a lighter note, the idea of our 3 working girls, Julia/Liz/Gina, bottling up semen for beauty masks and therefore..... giving facials to women in their spa was pretty funny (even if the case of that woman using her son's semen to treat her skin was really ewwwww)!! That trio is definitely becoming entertaining. If there ever were a metaphor of females taking over and getting the penis...I mean the power, it was that one!

Date: 2005-11-06 05:56 am (UTC)Glad to hear that all is mostly well there. My concern actually caused me not to ask. I figured if you were worried you would say something; and I didn't think that I needed to intrude when it wasn't necessary. Strange I know.... perhaps that is how one called trésor is meant to consider his maîtresse!? Be well.
