I saw many positive reactions on my flist yesterday, and I agree with everyone, that was a very good episode. I still have  a soft spot for "A Study In Pink", probably because it was the first time we saw the updated version but that "Reichenbach Fall" was definitely excellent!

I didn't expect Moriarty to kill himself!

So many references to the SH books but also many BBC tv shows (Moffat's Jekyll, Doctor Who and Life On Mars even!), and I couldn't help thinking of The Prestige too*...

BTW before "the fall", Sherlock clued John in, saying "it's just a magic trick", but John didn't listen...

Also I wonder...we aren't supposed to know the man on the bicycle who conveniently knocked John down before he could reach the body, are we? One of Molly's lab colleagues perhaps?

Poor John. But since he made Sherlock famous with his blog, he had to truly believe that Sherlock was dead. Martin Freeman was again terrific in the episode. Above all, I loved the little details like the reverting to military behaviour when John was on verge of losing it during the grave scene. Such a nice touch.

And Mrs Hudson's horrified reaction when Sherlock says there's a camera: "I'm in my nighties!"

I also loved the Molly stuff, how her selflessness foreshadowed Sherlock's sacrifice (how he learned from her), and how her being unnoticed worked regarding Moriarty's scheme; he "knew" her better (given that they went out three times, something that we were reminded about in the episode!) than the 3 he counted as Sherlock's friends (and Sherlock let him think that 3 was the right number!) but he didn't really notice her, she never counted for him, which helped Sherlock to do whatever he did with her off-screen.

Moriarty was Sherlock but a Sherlock who didn't evolve, a Sherlock who didn't learn and didn't change, because he was truly alone, had no friends. John is Sherlock's mate; he called him his only friend in "Hounds", because there's something unique in their relationship a bond that is like a marriage, but it's been obvious in the three episodes that Sherlock do have feelings towards other people (Mrs Hudson, Lestrade, Mycroft and Molly to whom he apologised in "Scandal"). To use a Spike analogy, John is "the one" to Sherlock, but more than John, Molly was, this season, the key character showing that Sherlock is capable of changing, of becoming the good man Lestrade once foretold. Molly is Sherlock's Dawn!!!! :- )

I know he Moff didn't write this episode but the whole fairytale stuff was so Moffat, and Moriarty calling himself a "storyteller" and the "character assassination" of the media-famous Sherlock Holmes (in other words the "Reichenbach character") was such a brilliant idea. What a great way to transpose ACD killing off his hero!

The more I watch the series the more I think that Mycroft is the truly intriguing character here. I can't believe that he was fooled by Moriarty and was a big mouth who made a mistake.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that HE did manipulate John throughout the episode  --hence his "I'm sorry", just like Sherlock manipulated his friend and apologised on the phone too( the Holmes brothers are much more alike than they think)--, and is possibly the bigger schemer of all...the final scene in the gentlemen's club wasn't easy to read, but I read it as someone that considered the job finally done. He's the kind of man who would take extraordinary measures to get the "king of criminals", including "helping" Moriarty to destroy the Sherlock's fame.

I am not saying that Sherlock and Mycroft worked together on this, but that Mycroft manipulated everybody and counted on his little brother's skills to eventually turn the tables on Moriarty and escape one way or another.

We saw the turn, and the prestige, we have yet to learn the trick, but we'll have to wait until season 3.

PS: All those who didn't like Irene's exit are going to say that it foreshadowed Sherlock's faking his own death now. LOL

*ETA: and to "House"! The scene in which Sherlock is waiting and thinking while throwing a small ball was totally a wink at House, the other modern Sherlock, wasn't it?
