Undershirted, unshaved, unvanquished

chaniSo that's it, Caprica is back. It's about time!
I liked it but once again the STO/Church stuff is the weakest bit and the boring part (When Marsters asked "Am I boring you?" I almost wondered if it weren't an instance of breaking the 4th wall!). I must say that the Gemenon world was kinda disappointing. It looked so cheap (stop with the CGI please!)and I was unimpressed by the church guys.
I wish the show would focus on Daniel and Joseph and have them together on screen more often (even though Morales can't compete with Stoltz in the acting department he has his moments and they have great chemistry, the slash writes itself!)...
That said, Clarice pitching her Apotheosis via the holoband was neat and Meg Tilly was really good in the role of the Mother. She was the highlight of the Gemenon storyline.
I enjoyed the parallel between Daniel and Clarice (both of them unaware that the virtual heaven they pitched already happened in New Cap City for Zoe and Tamara), and between the Guatrau and the Blessed Mother; I enjoyed vocabulary nods to BSG ("boxed" "toaster" etc) and the inside joke about being surprised given the final twist about Amanda.
I was sure Amanda was dead (they'd better have a good explanation for her surviving the fall) and Paula Malcomson was only going to play an avatar but SyFy misled me with its sneak peeks. She is in bed with the enemy now (the rival Daniel doesn't suspect yet), which is a rewriting of what they had originally planned for the character since Amanda was supposed to cheat on Daniel with Vergis.
And Daniel is now the partner of the Adama brothers. The real clash isn't between humans and cylons, or polytheism and monotheism but between a macho world (the Ha'la'tha, the business world, the science guys) and a more matriarcal society : the Church is run by a Mother; Clarice is the STO star and has now power over the other cells; Zoe disposed of several men in New Cap and is looking for Tamara; Lacy tells Keon to shut up!
When they put the U-87 in its box it reminded me of the ending of Raiders of the Lost Ark. And Obal's death reminded me of Ceasar's (btw I very much prefer Polly Walker in Rome). Et tu Diego?
Eric Stoltz continues to be awesome as Daniel (and super sexy when he is a mess! I just love seeing him unshaved and in his undershirt
;- P) and Cyrus Xander rocks (I knew he would remain loyal to Daniel)!
I expected Daniel to be lower and more distraught but, given the final scene, the way Eric played the part makes sense. He has lost his company and his robot but he knew that Amanda was alive. He's hurt and lonely but not knock out, and he may believe that he can win all of them back, the company, the wife, the cylon.
He's down but not defeated, depressed but not devastated. Unvanquished, indeed.
I need to rewatch the episode for I probably missed many details.

I'm wondering if Amanda is still in the real world, maybe she is in some virtual reality too?

Date: 2010-10-06 02:49 pm (UTC)Concerning Amanda, it was a bit ambiguous and there was definitely something weird about the virtual messages Daniel and her left to each other(the scene in which we see Daniel's naked back made me wonder), but I don't think she would have looked injured if she had been in a virtual world. The scene with Clarice looked real, unless Clarice made it up just like she did with the attack at the beginning of the episode, but I don't think that Clarice is able to do so––and in that case how could virtual Amanda "communicate" with Daniel?
I think that Amanda survived but did leave her spouse and he's going to try to make a replacement because he misses her while still waiting for the real one to come back. Having Amanda dead but existing in a virtual reality would be a needless repetition of the Tamara storyline.
