chani: (Caprica daniel and joseph)

Caprica does have flaws, still trying to find its pace and vibe, but I'm hooked.

So the episode took us back to the relationships between the Adamas and the Graystones, especially the one between Daniel and Joseph. And things get ugly...

Oh Joseph how wrong you are, using your brother like that as if you were the Guatrau himself, using him like your hitman to beat the pulp out of Daniel, and eventually asking him to "balance it out" ! Daniel is somewhat morally ambiguous and did hurt you by preying on your sorrow and giving you false hope but taking a contract out on his wife...Jospeh that's a huge step out of the grey area and into the dark one.

So this episode pointed out that Joseph Adama isn't a good guy. No wonder that Romo Lampkin hated his guts. Ron Moore directed the episode and I loved how he used classic shots from film noirs. As Daniel was on the ground after Sam punched him, Joseph was introduced in the classical threatening way by showing his shoes first. I wonder how the Sam/Joseph relationship is going to evolve...I really like the idea of Uncle Sam (pun intended I guess) and how young Willy is just mesmerized by everything about him. It makes a lot of sense.

By the way I loved the boxing scene. It was a nice touch connecting Caprica to BSG again. The colonials used boxing to deal with their frustrations after the New Caprica fiasco, and here Daniel was using boxing to deal with the Memorial fiasco...but on his own, with a sparring partner, because he's isolated. I also liked Cyrus Xander's take on it. Daniel may like that "rate hole" and miss his parents' basement but he boxed like an aristocrat, nothing like what we saw on BSG season 3. It was a nice contrast with the Adamas who know to box/play dirty. Daniel learnt it on the street, a place wherein he didn't belong. I expected Daniel to give Joseph a taste of his own medicine as they were in the tech world/virtual room (Daniel's field this time)but apparently he didn't and was genuine(unless he did something when he went back to the real world).

I found him to be quite understanding with Amanda too. Of course he sort of lectured her (oh the irony of hearing him talk about thinking of the consequences!), but he was rather nice and loving. Eric Stoltz and Paula Malcomson are simply fantastic together (Well, Eric is impressive on the show whether Daniel is alone or with other characters), they make us believe in that couple, in the Graystones' 20 year marriage. No matter what they hide to one another, no matter the bad stuff and the deceptions, they need to be together, they click. Those two actors have really a great chemistry on screen. It was funny to see them discovering their respective injuries as Amanda went downstairs. And the "how about a good frak" reminded me of Kara Thrace's way of coping. Apparently a character is going to be killed off half-season, but I hope it won't be Amanda.

Speaking of romance, something must be brewing between Joseph and Evelyn...

As for Zoe-A meeting Tamara-A, I didn't see that coming! Am I worried about Tamara-A being on her own in the V-Club; if anyone shoots her, she's gone for good. Zoe didn't sound like a genius there, it's Lacey who seemed to have a working brain.

Of course Zoe-A was a bit traumatized by the fact she had witnessed her parents having sex. I think it was an interesting idea to adress the sexuality issue that way. First, in the pilot, we had Daniel finding out that his daughter went to virtual sex groups and then hearing from Zoe-A that his daughter had been on birth control, then Amanda discovered that Zoe had been sexually active for a while whereas she thought that her daughter was too young to have a boyfriend, and now Cylon-Zoe had to see Amanda intiating sex and frakking her daddy!
They all had to face the one thing that both parents and children don't want to think about and are usually in denial about. The show is really daring and the robot was again very expressive. Kuddos to the people behind the effects!

Speaking of Zoe and Lacey, I think there's a parallel between that relationship and the other ones. Zoe expects Lacey to be her loyal friend and do something for her, to make it up for deserting her before, just like Daniel asked Joseph to have something steal for him, just like Joseph is counting on his brother to do the dirty job for him. Joseph had to cross a line to do what Daniel expected from him, and Lacey wasn't too hot on the task that has been assigned to her, so I guess that Sam may have a problem with killing Amanda Graystone too, for both his sake and his brother's.

Also there's a question of trust going on between various characters hence Daniel telling Amanda "you don't trust me!"and Zoe-A saying that Zoe didn't trust Clarice, that Lacey is the only one she can trust now. Joseph trusts his brothers but will it last?

Oh and we didn't see Serge much but he made me smile again "you are injured, do you need assistance?". BTW in this geeky fan world Serge Graystone has a twitter account on which the little robot shares his thoughts! In one of the messages he says "I try to be my best" which of course made me think of Dollhouse. Sniff...

We need more Serge on screen!

So I'm still enjoying Caprica very much, mostly because of Eric Stoltz and Esai Morales, but I had the same problem with this episode as the one I had with the pilot. I love the family stuff and the Daniel/Joseph scenes but the STO stuff felt off. Like in the pilot I found the teenagers scene at the Athena Academy scene to be boring and not well acted. The actress playing Lacey is rather good but the others not so much. Clarice's virtual get-away wasn't well done either. I think it's partly the writing and partly the acting. Anyway they haven't found the right ground yet.

It is interesting. I like the cultural aspects. But the men in fedoras freak me out.

Heehee! I love the Borsalinos! The Tauron mafia arc works well IMO. Sam Adama is a very dangerous man (the killing of the Defence Minister in the pilot was epic)but I find him to be more endearing than Joseph. And the Taurons speak Ancient Greek! The gang rap song we heard when Willy was skipping school to visit his uncle, in the mob bar, was in Ancient Greek.

The way they created that society that is close to ours but not quite the same is intriguing, isn't it? It's like Blade Runner.

I want my own Serge!
