chani: (tahmoh dollhouse)

So I've seen the pilot. I didn't dislike it, it wasn't bad at all, it was rather...efficient and entertaining, but I wasn't impressed. Unlike Whedon's previous tv shows it didn't look that special and refreshing. First episodes are often flawed and weaker than the rest of the season with Joss Whedon but usually a pilot is promising still; it tells us that what we are going to watch is original and unconventional. These are words I wouldnt use for Dollhouse despite the concept the show is based on. However because it's Joss I will give it some time and will stick on. Not sure it's the right "genre" for him though.

I still have big reservations about Eliza Dushku for the role. She tries a lot and does her best but she lacks something and I could not believe in her character either when imprinted or in childlike state. I was feeling a bit like the father who told Echo that he wanted her to make him believe in her, I wanted to be fooled...except I didn't get to be fooled. I don't know how to say it well but the thing is I could see her trying new attitudes, trying to put expressions on her face but she wasn't expressive at all at the end of the day. It was as if she was trying to be this and that but didn't believe it herself. The opposite of Echo's storyline! All I saw was the acting without the miraculous outcome that makes you forget it is an act; the magic didn't work.  Also I think she should work on the way she moves and stands, because it's always the same way no matter what and who she's supposed to be. The other female characters, who aren't the lead, delivered though. The male actors aren't bad either.

And the highlight of the episode was the first Tahmoh scene. *points icon made by [livejournal.com profile] moscow_watcher *

It was good to see him since Helo has been missing in action on Battlestar Galactica lately. I may sound biased here, but I do think that Tahmoh Penikett is much more than a tall hunk with finely chiselled features. He has charisma and acting skill that provide the magic I was talking about earlier. On BSG he made gold out of any little screen times he got.

I did like the fight scene and Tahmoh is into that type of fighting that's why Josh put it in. It has to be a foreshadowing of what is to come for Tahmoh's character. He's going to get a beating down, either by his bosses or Echo... or both. But he'll come back from it and prevail. I got the idea that the show is going to be more about him and less about 'Echo.'

I like Echo's handler, shades of the Carl Lumbly who backed up Jennifer Garner's character in ALIAS. And I like the guy who zaps them into and out of character. He's got that geeky self-confidence in his character. Except that it might be that the heart and chain Echo had in her hand when she was wiped that first time (on screen) might be the catalyst for her starting to remember things....

Honestly, "Mine Own Worst Enemy" was a better show about this same 'technology.' It had more depth and a richness of interwoven characters right off the bat. I don't get Josh's need to titillate his audience. Even if I were straight I don't think I'd be turned on by Dushku or any of the other women on the show. And that thing she and the terminator-girl from "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" that is on before "Dollhouse" is just so yech.... blah! Frankly, I don't think Dushku could act her way out of a wet paper bag when she tries to act as an "alluring woman." Otherwise, she's not too bad. I liked her Ms Penn character, it seemed to fit her.

Though I do appreciate the Tahmoh beefcake! And like your icon (can I steal it?). Every time I see him, I'll be undressing that torso with my eyes..... and the start going down.

Oh trésor too bad you didn't watch BSG!

I didn't make the icon, but I guess it's sharable. ;- )

The terminator-girl is much better than Dushku IMO.

Tahmoh is into martial arts indeed, and there was a boxing scene in BSG season 3 too. Joss totally stole the idea but it makes sense in regard to characterization and it was a good way to introduce Paul Ballard. Tahmoh has a great body and is very tall but he also is very graceful. The first thing that I noticed on BSG was the way he walks and carries himself.
