Battlestar Galactica rocks
Feb. 14th, 2009 02:48 pmThat frakking show never ceases to amaze me!
.Oh I love it when a tv show surprises me! The Cavil stuff did suprise me. I didn't expect him to be the deus ex machina behind the Final Five's amnesia and their time in the colonies .
But it's about time we've got a real background for the Final Five. Still not sure how it comes that "human beings" completely forgot everything about creating the Final Five on Kobol but I hope we'll get an explanation later.
Blood and incest in the family!!! That show is so Greek!
There was so much stuff in this episode, you can tell that the writers didn't have much time left.
So Ellen's death was not an exit. Cavil was stuck in his body. Galactica can't jump for a while because of the damages. No exit indeed.
I loved the opening scene and how Ellen went from horror and fear to accessing her Final Five's memories/data and simply accepting what she was.
BTW "accepting what you are" seemed to be the leitmotiv of the episode. Adama stated it when talking to Tyrol (I love his "all I have is a Galen") and reminding him he is the Chief, Ellen echoed it later. Cavil and Boomer were both struggling with what they were.
Also there was a lot of continuity there...Cavil's revolt against "his parents" echoed the human mutineers' on Galactica, Gaeta's rebellion against Papadama and also Baltar's final mystic speech to his followers, a speech against God, a creator that might have made mistakes and should ask them all for forgiveness. Boomer chose to forgive her creator.
Has BSG ever been about anything but family? Methinks that the parents/children them run throughout the series, is the core of the show. The rest is just a way to customize the main arc.
The Saul/Caprica Six scene was cute, yet knowing what we know now, the baby could be a freak. Our Final Five looks more and more like ancient gods, fooling around with their own children, making half-breeds.
Suddenly I remember Caprica telling Blatar that the cylons were children of humanity.
Alos nice Lee/Roslin scene that recalled their season 1 interactions. As mother/son interactions go it was a quiet counterpoint to Ellen/John. I like Lee's line about trying to be "smarter and wronger".
I also smile at Ellen mentioning "the swirl" and asking "are you blushing, John?". I wonder if there was more to it than just a naughty nod to the New Caprica incest-y scene. There was something very Socrates-like in the dialogues Ellen had with both Cavil and Boomer; Ellen who died from drinking the poisoned cup as Socrates did..
But my favourite part in this episode is the nice parallel between Sam and the Galactica, how the hidden cracks Tyrol showed to Adama with the purple light actually looked like "the beautiful image" of Ander's brain. Does Sam's brain death means that the ship is doomed as well.
No exit indeed.
Also Adama wanting to save "his girl" kind of echoed Ellen's love to her flawed and damaged son.
As for Ellen's father? Well...it may be a wink at the orginal series and the Being of Light named John, if I remember correctly. I hope not though. I don't want Beings of Light in this show. I prefer to think of a man from Kobol named John who designed the cylons of the thirteen tribe.
And the missing Number 7, now known as Daniel? Kuddos to RM for turning a mistake into a plot point! We shall not remember the previous credits that stated "there are 12 models". Fortunately they have changed the credits. :- )
So John killed his brother out of jealousy. Now that's biblical. Not sure I understand exactly what he did and when. I must rewatch the episode.

Date: 2009-02-14 10:48 pm (UTC)I'd disagree with you about the Five's origins; whilst the 13th tribe were created/came from Kobol, I interpreted the dialogue to mean that the Five had been born on Earth, biologically, to "Cylon" parents. They had just been part of a functioning, procreating species rather than having been artificially built like the Skinjobs.
I also love the fact that "God" is an alcoholic. :-) Nice to see Ellen back, albeit a very different Ellen!
The idea that the entire nuclear annihilation of the human race was simply Cavill trying to prove a point to the Five was very interesting as well.
