I've just watched the 2 hour finale of Lost. Wow!

I enjoyed the two episodes and ok they did surprise me this time!

I didn't expect the final twist at all. I suspected that something didn't fit when we saw Jack's ex-wife all pregnant but I couldn't have guessed why! Changing the writing formula like that was brilliant. The flashbacks routine about the characters' background was getting old. It was a daring move. The the island stuff has become the flashbacks while the off-island stuff was set in the future. I wonder if it's going to be the rule next season. Maybe we won't see beared messed-up Jack at all until the show is over.

But first off the stuff I loved.

I loved how Rose left Bernard (I'm a dentist not Rambo!) and the way Jin and Sun parted.

I loved that Sawyer decided to go back to the beach. I knew he wouldn't leave his Jin behind! *g* And of course I loved how Hugo saved the day using Roger's car. Great connection with the previous episodes. The Sawyer/Hurley/Jin male bonding moments have been one of the highlights of this season, add Sayid in the mix and it's terrific.

When Sawyer killed Tom in cold blood it reminded me of Juliet killing that guy on the beach to allow Sawyer, Kate and Karl to leave. I don't think it was a coincidence. The scenes mirror each other. Also Sayid snapping the last other's neck with his legs recalled Jack's threat about snapping Ben's neck. Jack is all talk but Sayid is action man even when his hands are tied up.

Looks like almost all the major characters have killed someone so far. They all have blood in their hands.

I loved that Desmond had to dive in, helped Charlie and how they kept giving hints at Ulyss' Myth when Mickail showed up and Charlie called him a Cyclop while Desmond/Odysseus was hiding in the cave station. And of course Penny introduced herself as Penelope in case it wasn't enough...

I loved how Charlie calmly explained to the two "amazons" that he would drown if the station were flooded. I loved that only a musician could compose the code by typing The Beach Boys ' "Good Vibrations". It was such a poetic yet funny touch. Charlie was meant to go off while being on stage! I loved how Charlie died. I even cried and I think it's because of Desmond's presence. I knew Charlie was going to die, it was so obvious, so I was prepared for him to drown but I lost it when Desmond was running, saw Penelope's face on the screen, called her and Charlie locked the door to protect him from the flood and wrote the "No Penny's boat" note for Desmond to see as he was facing death. Damn that was intense!

I don't necessarily want happy endings but I want one for David Desmond Hume. He really deserves it.

The stuff I enjoyed.

I was relieved to see Locke open his gorgeous green eyes, finding himself on his back again, thinking he was paralyzed again. His attempt of suicide recalled Jack on the bridge. I didn't expect Walt to show up but it makes sense and echoed previous apparitions of Walt. And it was connected to what Sawyer told Tom.

Locke showing up eventually wasn't very surprising but it's always good to see him being resilient, on his feet. His killing Naomi was "lessened" by the fact we knew she'd lied thanks to Charlie's message. What Jack did was a mistake, we know it from the post-island stuff we got to see. He screwed up and paid the price after all. Does it redeem Ben as well? I don't think so.

I liked the fact that Locke couldn't kill Jack though.

Also I didn't like Moses!Jack but I enjoyed screwed-up Jack. I liked how everything was tied in. I liked that the theme of whether going back or not had echoes in the Jack-flashes. I liked that Jack was becoming his father Christian too while the young surgeon was playing his former role. By the way I wonder if the moment in which he told him to get his father to see who was the drunkest  one was significant or not. The doctor didn't reply. We know that Christian is supposed to be dead. Was it just a way to show how much Jack had lost it while keeping the audience in the dark about the final twist? Given his comment we could believe that were seeing flashbacks as usual.

I'm pretty sure that many fans have frozzen the shot on the newspaper obituary and already know whose funeral it was. It's probably nobody we know, and there's a whole season ahead that is going to explain why Jack thought that Kate might show up at the funeral but I like to think it was another poetic touch that echoed Charlie's death.

As for Jack on the bridge, wanting to fall off, wanting his flights to crash, wanting to go back to the island, I can't help thinking that the writers have been inspired by the finale of Life On Mars!

By the way, if Jack believes that taking any flight and hoping for it to crash would bring him back to the island, it seems a huge clue about what the island might be.

Stuff I didn't like much.

Kate and Jack.

Obviously the writers insist in wanting that pairing to be the romantic core of the show. They made it clear when Jack told her his love in the flashbacks and making them leave the island together even though they are not together (by the way I think the "he" Kate hinted at might be her husband, Captain Tightpants!). But it doesn't work for me. They just don't write Jate right at all, it's never moving, it's predictable, boring and formulaic beyond the telling of it.

I've heard some spec that one of the reasons Jack so desperately wants to go back to the island is because the island can cure cancer.. and the Oxycontin he was taking is used to treat cancer. It's a bit out there and certainly wouldn't be the only reason why Jack would want to return but it's interesting nevertheless.

Btw, is Skate a typo? Or do you mean Jate? In which case I fully agree with you, I find Kate and Jack rather boring together.

There are indeed screencaps of the obituary and the name is supposedly "John Latham", which is the name of a conceptual artist btw. Anyhow, the transcript of the deceased "John Latham"'s obituary has some people thinking it's Michael living under an alias. It has to be someone Kate knows too, and considering how she didn't care to go to the funeral at all, that someone must not be someone she likes, and not someone whom Jack counts a friend... Michael might fit up.

Oh yes I meant Jate! lol

I've got to correct the typo.

John Latham? Hummm...Could be someone we haven't seen yet.

I found the actual text from the newspaper:

The body of John Lantham of
New York was found shortly after 4
am in the 4300 block of Grand
Avenue.
Ted Worden, a doorman at The
Tower Lofts complex, heard loud
noises coming from the victim's loft.
Concerned for tenants' safety, he
entered the loft and found the
body hanging from a beam in the
living room. According to Jaime Ortiz, a police spokesman, the incident was deemed a suicide after medical tests. Latham (sic) is survived by one teenaged son. Memorial services will be held at the Hoffs-Drawlar Funeral Home tomorrow evening.

Is it Lantham or Latham then?

Mmmm...Could it be an anagram too?

The profile seems to fit Michael because of the teenaged son and he definitely had reasons to commit suicide. And you could see Jack's (another possible suicidee) empathy there. But it could be a red herring.

So glad you enjoyed the finale.

I too, enjoyed the show for all the reasons you mentioned.
I'm wondering if they now will address issues on and off the island as it seems a "rescue" team is coming.
I'm glad they have a finite number of episodes (48) in which to reveal the entire story. In television, I think it makes for better writing when you know it's got to end at a given point vs. getting cancelled midstory at the whim of the network.

John and I will be going to Comic-Con San Diego in July.
I'm sure there will be someone representing Lost again this year.
Lindeloff is a very interesting speaker and has a great sense of humor.
If they give us any teasers I'll be sure and let you know.
I teared up for good ol' Charlie too.
The original survivors might not be perfect but they've grown on us as people and almost seem like a family now. Killers that they are.
Is it just Sun and Claire now that haven't actually killed anyone by their own hand (I know they're responsbile inderectly for deaths)?

I feel for Sawyer in a way. Strangely, I understand all the deaths he was responsible for except the poor little tree frog.
I was very angry with him for a long time about doing that.
Also, I'm glad to see Locke got up and got out of that pit.
It's as if he had been stuck in another hatch.

I was also happy to see he didn't attempt to take Jack out.

I'm guessing they may take some of the people off the island and leave some behind? Wouldn't that be interesting?
I'm sure Rose may very well want to stay, along with Locke and possibly even Sawyer. Or maybe the rescue team will say they can only take a certain number and then they aren't able to go back and get the rest of them because of the difficulty finding the island.
I'm just speculating.

The writing has gotten much better in the past few episodes.

I've been looking for someone to share Lost stuff with again.
Hope you don't mind.
(You too, Nadia.)

*hugs*

p.s. Can't wait for BSG to come back.

Hello dee!

True. I liked that "Life on Mars" has always been supposed to be 16 episodes btw.

Ahhh the poor little tree frog, Sawyer's own Jimini Cricket!

*sniff*

I do think that the people are going to split, some may follow Jack and others may follow Locke (especially if Desmond reaches them and tell them that Naomi lied!)and it may take many episodes, perhaps the entire season, to explore the divides and before the "bad guys" show up but I don't see anyone leaving the island. "Lost" wouldn't be "Lost" if the action went on off the island. I guess that we'll only get flash-backs and flash-forwards when it comes to the off-island stuff but I may be wrong.

Have fun with John at the Comic-con!

PS: It's gonna be so difficult to wait for BSG next season...I want season 3 on DVDs now!!!!

Greek Mythology/Literature on tv shows and, in this case, Desmond being a modern Odysseus is my hobby-horse so when they gave me clues about that I can't miss them! ;- )

The boyfriend was spoiled but didn't tell me anything.

Actually, my first theory was that it was the future. It was more of a gut feeling, but Jack's frame of mind was so different to what we'd seen before and that horrible straggly beard seemed to be a clue - he had managed to stay clean-shaven on the island and now that he had been rescued he behaved like he was still on the island beardwise.

I liked what you liked.
Somehow Jack became much more interesting in this episode, more badass which doesn't mean I suddenly like him or the Jate stuff, but he seemed less annoying in his own way.
It was scary how he had turned into his own father (and that comment about his father upstairs was indeed strange - maybe being rescued from the island means that time is reset? That would be weird.)

As to whose funeral it was - I had the feeling it was Sawyer, because that's the one person that is most strongly connected to Kate and Jack. It doesn't make much sense, I know, especially with the teenage son (yes, there was a pregnant girlfriend, but that doesn't seem to fit the timeframe). It's probably someone else.

I also enjoyed the Bond-style absurdity of the Looking Glass station though of course Charlie didn't survive. What do you make of the Alice in Wonderland allusion?

And then Jack as Moses... He had a glimpse of the promised land but in a twist he mistook being rescued and returning home for the real thing.

Good catch on the Bond-style absurdity!:- )

What do you make of the Alice in Wonderland allusion?

As I said, it's difficult not to think of "Life On Mars", especially when Jack said that he kept taking various flights hoping that they would crash so he would go back. I never thought that the island was a true island anyway, more like a metaphorical place.

But I wonder if we can trust those flash forwards...It was Jack's point of view only after all. We have no evidence that this is the "real off-island world".

There are still many possibilities.

I trust the flash forward insofar as I see it as a possible future - not necessarily THE future and yes, it could be in his imagination altogether, but I'll take it as a sort of working hypothesis of what might happen if they are rescued and leave the island.
