Justice or show ?
Feb. 11th, 2006 01:44 pmWhile the Parliament Committe is still working on the infamous Outreau Affair, one of the main French networks showed bits of the hearing of Judge Burgaud who conducted investigations and whom the 13 acquitted people consider as the main person to blame for the tragedy...I really don't know what to think about that. He's very young and was pathetic, like a student who made a mistake and was caught. Many people were shocked by that picture, I guess they expected a monster or something. Same people often thought that the hearing of the victims (the 13 acquitted people) was poignant (and it was indeed). I even found on the Internet the point of view of an American living in Paris, HERE it's quite interesting...
Now after watching the last hearing, some viewers think that Burgaud has become the 14th victim of that judicial fiasco.
In the newspaper Libération, a few days ago, Florence Aubenas (our former hostage in Irak) wrote an article in which various personalities were interviewed and said the question they would ask Judge Burgaud. I liked what Fred Vargas ( a crime novels writer) said :
( Que diriez-vous au Juge Burgaud ? )
Like thousands people I've followed the case and I wonder...
Is television doing some civic work by showing those hearings, thus involving the nation in something that belongs to the res publica through the little screen, or is it simply indulging in pathos and providing a new reality show that will give thrill and tears ?
