I suppose so... but I didn't think of Istanbul as Third World, and it's not like they aren't used to having tourists. I never thought it would bother me that much, either.
The idea of tourists strolling into a mosque with their shoes on makes me cringe, similarly to the idea of muslim families in Europe refusing to integrate themselves. One needs to be able to adapt.
