Sometimes you just don't know

I saw  Renaissance, an animated French movie, yesterday, and still can't decide whether it was good or not. As you can see, the animation is stunning. It was filmed with actual actors first and they used Motion Capture thingies, then transformed into a black and white comic-strip style which turned into something you have NEVER seen before ! It's simply incredible.

In the year 2054 in Paris, police and the Avalon Corp. are trying to find a kidnapped researcher, Ilona Tasuievn...

For the non-French users of my flist, here's the trailer:

Renaissance

You cannot not be in awe of the originality and formal perfection displayed on the screen. Besides there are a few things about the futuristic Paris that I really liked (and it isn't necessarily its Blade Runnish side). But is it enough to make a good movie?
The plot couldn't be more classic but it didn' t suck even though the characters are all quite stereotypical. I didn' t enjoy the romance part because it was too much of a cliche but I found the ending interesting because the couple might be doomed anyway for there's a lie between them and Avalon must have pictures of what Karas did.

The other day I saw on the cable a movie called Strange Days starring Ralph Fiennes and Angela Bassett, and I thought of it while leaving the theatre yesterday. It had some cyberpunk  stuff in common with Renaissance, but it was more mainstream  concerning the formal aspect and at the same time much more refreshing in regard to the characters and the relationships between them.

Renaissance is gorgeous and definitely impressive but lacks depth...
