Thank you for posting this, as I hadn't seen it before.
I loved William in FFL, and that's really where I fell in love with Spike for the first time. I agree with you re: LMPTM, although until now I hadn't quite understood why that particular William didn't ring true to me. I think you put your finger on it though. He seemed too old, too mature. I also would agree with your idea that with the soul Spike freed himself, resulting in his ability to choose his own destiny. Very intriguing post.
