Tara. She was the last grown up character on Buffy (not counting Giles because he wasn't there half the time) and I felt like they killed her because they needed something to make Willow snap. And that they needed Willow to snap because they didn't know how to end the season.
Wow. Looking back at this, I think I have a lot of issues with season 6.
And since I never watched Ats, I can't answer the second part.
