I think that there was two men speaking through Daniel's mouth, first the scientist who was thrilled about creating an artificial sentience, a "new race" as he said, and then the businessman who didn't want to lose his company, who was determined to fight and win, and who knew exactly what to say to convince the board, so he pushed the profit button.
He is a complex man with many layers. I love the character!
