I think it was a mess, except for Adelle and Topher. I love them together. I think the moment that I realized how bad it was was when Victor was channelling Topher. That was so enjoyable, but pulled me out of the narrative so completely to admire it, that it proved how tissue-thin the narrative was to begin with.
Echo's character was so badly served in so many ways here -- the fact that it was her body, and not her indivuduality, that mattered would be a sour note indeed to end the series on. And I really did not need to see her raped yet again. this time with multiple syringes, by her father figure no less. Her use of Boyd as a weapon of mass destruction seemed completely OOC (unless Caroline was to blame), and a negation of her entire hero quest. It simply was not necessary. Mellie was thrown away as I knew she would be, but self-realization in 10 seconds flat is a bit much.
Maybe Joss wasn't as involved in this one (I hope), but he's gone on record as saying he likes the finale, so I'm still hoping for a redemption of sorts.
