Is Boyd really the head of Rossum or is he just the vessel that the head of Rossum exists in The thought crossed my mind too, but it wouldn't change anything anyway since the only Boyd we know is this Boyd. I mean we "care" about the character not about the body.
..... or just one of several vessels?
Yes I suppose the Rossum head could have imprinted himself in several bodies, like Mr Ambrose in the flashback from "Epitaph One", but it seemed to me that it couldn't be a permanent thing, rather a trick to deliver a message in different places at the same time. A person can't exist simultaneously in different bodies unless the avatars are connected and can share their experiences so they feel that they are one. At some point the vessels would become different people, or rather every vessel would be a unique persona, and they might want to get rid of their rivals, the same way Clyde was betrayed by his partner Boyd. There can be only one Rossum head.
