I know that, in theory, Esther's behaviour and her personality suddenly showing Caroline should work, but it didn't work for me on screen. Esther's change of mind towards Sparrow, that got her being hit and thus seeing again, happened too fast or something. I couldn't believe in what I saw.

You're right about Boyd, it's the first time he crossed the line, what I meant it that the scene was a cliché, seen over and over in so many films and tv shows.
