Dollhouse test
Feb. 15th, 2009 01:10 pmSo I've seen the pilot. I didn't dislike it, it wasn't bad at all, it was rather...efficient and entertaining, but I wasn't impressed. Unlike Whedon's previous tv shows it didn't look that special and refreshing. First episodes are often flawed and weaker than the rest of the season with Joss Whedon but usually a pilot is promising still; it tells us that what we are going to watch is original and unconventional. These are words I wouldnt use for Dollhouse despite the concept the show is based on. However because it's Joss I will give it some time and will stick on. Not sure it's the right "genre" for him though.
I still have big reservations about Eliza Dushku for the role. She tries a lot and does her best but she lacks something and I could not believe in her character either when imprinted or in childlike state. I was feeling a bit like the father who told Echo that he wanted her to make him believe in her, I wanted to be fooled...except I didn't get to be fooled. I don't know how to say it well but the thing is I could see her trying new attitudes, trying to put expressions on her face but she wasn't expressive at all at the end of the day. It was as if she was trying to be this and that but didn't believe it herself. The opposite of Echo's storyline! All I saw was the acting without the miraculous outcome that makes you forget it is an act; the magic didn't work. Also I think she should work on the way she moves and stands, because it's always the same way no matter what and who she's supposed to be. The other female characters, who aren't the lead, delivered though. The male actors aren't bad either.

It was good to see him since Helo has been missing in action on Battlestar Galactica lately. I may sound biased here, but I do think that Tahmoh Penikett is much more than a tall hunk with finely chiselled features. He has charisma and acting skill that provide the magic I was talking about earlier. On BSG he made gold out of any little screen times he got.
