Could anyone explain to me how to use the LJ cut thingy?

I saw a very interesting movie last week, The Machinist, starring Chritian Bale who dropped 63 pounds for this role! His character, Trevor Reznic, is an industrial worker who says that he hasn't slept at all in a year. And his work can be very dangerous for such an exhausted person!

First I thought it would be a new version of  Modern Times, and I think there was indeed kinda a tribute to Chaplin in certain scenes, especially when another worker (Michael Ironside) gets his arm stuck inside the machine, between the cogwheels, because of Trevor's negligence. But this isn't a metaphor and the worker loses his arm.

It's a movie about a body actually...
