NO SPOILERS FOR CARNIVALE! I'm usual not very fond of too obvious dualism, but I thought it worked well in the context of Carnivale. And I felt that while there were clearly two sides I wasn't always sure which was actually the good one. While this became clearer as the seasons progressed, it still didn't bother me. Freaks is on my must-watch-list (I've only seen excerpts), so I didn't have that experience to compare it to Carnivale. Apart from the amazing title sequence, I particularly enjoyed the acting and the production value - they managed to get the period right down to the crappy blonde hair colour.
